Kabir
1440-1518
- Indian poet
- Tried to unite Hindu and Muslim religions
- Believed in the ultimate unity of all religions
- Leader of Sikhism, which was started by his student Nanak.
- Raised by a Muslim weaver
- Heavily influenced in youth by a Hindu ascetic named Ramananda
- Combined the best beliefs of both Hinduism and Islam to make his own religion called sahaja-yoga (simple union)
- Hinduism: ideas of transmigration and karma but not idolatry, asceticism and caste system
- Islam: one God (tawhid) and the equality of all humans in front of God
